wip

Last night and this evening's paint sesh.

This was inspired by 3 of my favorite animes. NGNL + Mahouka + Fate/Zero.
Think I need 1-2 more hours to adjust values, paint shoes, and the rail gun's turtle legs.

Have a good night world.

sketch

I thought I'd use my own comical misfortune to analyze character staging. At times I feel like my mind is exploding with information. Rather than have an Acme anvil fall on my head I would imagine flying bricks hitting my face. Nevertheless candy and flowers save the day.

it's been a while...

"The trip has been long and the cost has been high... but no great thing was ever attained easily. A long tale, like a tall Tower, must be built a stone at a time"

Kartika

Last year I was happy to be featured in Tayo Literary Magazine's Art Annual.  This year I am equally glad to be featured in Kartika Review's 14th Issue.

I was asked to contribute pieces alongside other Asian American writers of poetry and non-fiction for their fall issue.  Culture has always been a deeply rooted interest of mine and I feel extremely humbled to share my works alongside fellow talented Asian American Artists & Storytellers

If you click on the image to the left, you can purchase the full color version for 24.00 USD. A big thanks to Sunny Woan and others at Kartika Review.

Cheers,

Shaved Ice Magic

Last night I painted Prep & Landing's Wayne (tanned) and a sunburnt Lanny enjoying Matsumoto Shave Ice.

I also originally had several Stitch poses, but I felt he took away from the triangular twinning effect with the Lilo & Stitch character who constantly drops his ice cream.  Altogether it's a fun play between active and inactive area. May be I'll put Stitch back into the mix if I ever revisit this drawing.

The summer heat has had me craving Matsumoto's lilikoi and guava flavored shave ice.  I haven't made a trip to visit my family in Oahu in a long while but I can still imagine the taste of a magical spoonful of my second favorite island treat.

Here are some layout studies I did of a storybook commission.

Aloha,
Mikey :)

Brute + Singkil

Edit: Did some quick skeetches in similar fashion to my old "fan-girl" sketch below.

This video is of a San Diego cultural dance troupe performing Singkil.

Sinkil is a Moro dance from the Southern islands of the Philippines.

I'm not sure if I'm going to attack this project graphically. I do feel there's a bit of magic happening with the idea of folds and the angular nature of the dance. Lines are important as are the curvy weaving gestures of the "Fan Girls."

Years ago when I used to perform with Club Kai, I'd forget 8 counts due to being distracted by my female partners' movements.  I was partly scared that I might clip them while they make their way through the bamboo onslaught of the "clickers."
